7-DAY SHIRA ROUTE.

7 Days 6 Nights

The Shira Route begins on the Shira Plateau at 3,500m, immediately immersing hikers in stunning high-altitude moorland. It is similar to the Lemosho Route but starts higher, meaning acclimatization is more critical. This route offers breathtaking landscapes, relatively quiet trails, and a gradual ascent that increases the likelihood of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.

Your journey begins at the Shira Gate, where you are greeted by the vast Shira Plateau. Unlike other routes, you start at a high altitude, immediately walking through open moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. The trail is relatively gentle and winds past small streams and volcanic rock formations, offering spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks in the distance. After 4-6 hours of hiking, you arrive at Shira 1 Camp, your first night under the stars on the plateau.

The day begins with a gradual ascent across the plateau, where the landscape transforms into sparse alpine desert with rolling hills and distant glaciers. The trail is scenic and allows time for acclimatization while enjoying panoramic views. Wildlife sightings are rare but the terrain is dotted with moss-covered rocks and hardy alpine plants. You reach Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon, ready to rest and prepare for the climb toward Lava Tower.

Today is an acclimatization day with a climb-high, sleep-low strategy. You ascend steeply to Lava Tower (4,630m), passing dramatic rock formations and glacial valleys. The air becomes thinner, and the scenery turns more rugged, with views of Kibo’s glaciers shimmering under the sun. After enjoying the spectacular vista at Lava Tower, you descend to Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. This descent allows your body to adjust while maintaining energy for the days ahead.

The highlight of the day is climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable rock face offering stunning panoramic views. After the wall, the trail winds through a scenic valley, framed by towering cliffs and unique alpine flora. This moderate trek ends at Karanga Camp, providing time to rest and enjoy the serene surroundings.

From Karanga, the path gradually ascends to Barafu Camp, the staging area for your summit attempt. The terrain becomes rocky and barren, with glacial landscapes and dramatic vistas of Kibo. The trek is physically demanding but rewarding, with an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit ascent.

This is the most challenging day of the trek. You start around midnight, trekking by headlamp on steep switchbacks through scree and loose rocks. The cold is intense, and oxygen levels are low, but the sight of Stella Point at sunrise is unforgettable. Continuing along the crater rim, you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, where you can celebrate the culmination of your journey. The descent is long and demanding, passing Barafu and Karanga Camps before reaching Mweka Camp for an overnight stay.

The final day is a gentle descent through the lush rainforest, where the contrast from the alpine zones is striking. The trail winds past towering trees, hanging vines, and streams, leading you back to Mweka Gate, where your certificates of achievement await. The journey concludes with a sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to reflect on the dramatic landscapes, wildlife, and personal triumph of climbing Kilimanjaro.

Frequent Asked Question`s

How difficult is the Shira Route?

The Shira Route is considered moderately difficult. Because it starts at high altitude (3,500m), acclimatization is extremely important. This route is recommended only for trekkers with good physical fitness or prior high-altitude experience.

What makes the Shira Route different from other Kilimanjaro routes?

It begins higher than most routes, crossing the Shira Plateau from the very first day. It is similar to the Lemosho Route but starts farther up the mountain.

Is the Shira Route good for acclimatization?

Yes, but because the starting point is already high, proper acclimatization is essential. The climb-high, sleep-low approach (especially on Day 3 to Lava Tower) helps the body adjust.

How are the accommodations on the mountain?

You will sleep in high-quality mountain tents set up by porters. Dining tents, tables, and chairs are provided.
