VUGANE SAFARIS
Find quick answers to common questions about our safaris, destinations, itineraries, and travel planning. Our goal is to make your journey through Tanzania seamless, informed, and unforgettable.
Tanzania offers year-round safari experiences, each with its own appeal. The dry season (June–October) provides unparalleled wildlife viewing, including predator activity and the iconic Great Migration river crossings. The wet season (December–March) transforms the landscape into a lush, vibrant sanctuary, ideal for birdwatching and serene, uncrowded exploration.
Time of Crossing Migration - June through July
Time of Calving Season - January though February
Tanzania uses Type D and G outlets (UK-style) with 230V, 50Hz. We recommend a universal travel adaptor to ensure all devices, cameras, and electronics are fully operational during your journey.
While tipping is discretionary, it is customary to recognize exceptional service
Safari guides/drivers: $–$30 per person, per day
Our camps and lodges cater to refined culinary preferences and special dietary needs. Please inform us in advance of any requirements or allergies and we will accommodate you.
Tanzania’s wilderness is safe when explored responsibly:
For high-altitude regions like Kilimanjaro, consult your doctor regarding Diamox or other altitude sickness medication.
Other precautions: Sunscreen, insect repellent, and hydration are essential.
Vaccinations: Ensure routine immunizations are up-to-date, plus yellow fever if applicable. You would want to get vaccinated for Typhoid and Hepatitis B.
Most travelers require a visa, obtainable online (e-visa) or on arrival. To avoid long wait times at arrival, it is best to obtain the e-visa in advance of your trip. We recommend confirming requirements for your nationality well in advance to ensure seamless entry. Visa cost is $100 for American citizens and $50 for other nationalities.
Travel between Tanzania’s parks can be scenic and immersive:
Arusha → Tarangire: 2–3 hours
Tarangire → Serengeti: 6–7 hours (or 1-hour charter flight)
Serengeti → Ngorongoro: 3–4 hours
There will be no bathrooms during the game drives but there is always the bush bathroom.
Tanzania is rich in culture and tradition. Please respect the locals and dress modestly in villages and towns.
Asking permission before photographing locals is advised.
Please follow the rules and safety instructions provided by your guide, especially during drives in the national parks.
Behavior During Safari & Wildlife Safety
Your safety and the well-being of the wildlife are paramount. Always follow your guide’s instructions and make sure to:
1. Maintain a safe distance from all animals; do not feed or touch wildlife
2. Remain in your vehicle unless directed otherwise
3. Move quietly and deliberately to enhance your viewing experience
Clothing for safari is about comfort, practicality, and blending into the environment so wildlife notices you less. Think function first: fabrics that breathe, protect, and dry quickly. Stick to neutral tones like khaki, beige, olive, and tan — these blend with the environment and keep you comfortable. Avoid bright colors, white, blue, and black, as these attract insects like tsetse flies. Lightweight, breathable long-sleeved shirts and convertible pants are ideal, offering both sun and bug protection. Don't forget a warm layer for early morning and evening game drives, as temperatures can drop significantly. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential, and a buff or scarf will come in handy on dusty game drives. For footwear, opt for closed-toe walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots, and pack sandals for relaxing around camp.
