About 120 km southwest of Arusha, roughly a 2–3 hour drive from the safari hub.

Park Highlights

Baobab Trees

These ancient, giant trees — some over a thousand years old — dominate Tarangire’s skyline. They create surreal silhouettes at sunrise and sunset, making Tarangire one of the most photogenic parks in Africa.

Elephant Herds

Tarangire is renowned for having one of Africa’s largest elephant populations. Massive herds, sometimes numbering over 100 individuals, can often be seen cooling off by the river or moving gracefully between the baobabs.

Wildlife Migration

During the dry season (June–October), thousands of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and elands migrate to the Tarangire River — the park’s lifeline — creating spectacular game-viewing opportunities. Predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs follow closely behind.

Birdlife

With over 500 recorded bird species, Tarangire is a true birdwatcher’s paradise. From colorful bee-eaters and lovebirds to the majestic kori bustard (Africa’s heaviest flying bird), the park’s wetlands and woodlands provide endless birding delights.

Wildlife

In addition to elephants, Tarangire supports large populations of buffalo, giraffe, impala, and warthog. The park is also home to rare species such as the fringed-eared oryx and greater kudu, which are seldom seen elsewhere on the Northern Circuit.
