MACHAME ROUTE – 7 DAYS (MOST POPULAR & SCENIC).5076

7 Days 6 Nights

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and scenic trekking trails. Known for its beautiful and varied landscapes, the route takes climbers through lush rainforest, heather moorlands, alpine desert, and finally to the icy summit of Uhuru Peak.

It offers a good acclimatization profile, including the climb-high, sleep-low strategy, which increases success rates. The trail is steeper and more physically demanding than Marangu, but extremely rewarding with dramatic views and iconic features like the Shira Plateau and Barranco Wall.

Accommodation is by camping only, and the complete experience typically takes 7 days, giving hikers the best balance between challenge and acclimatization.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, located on the lush southern slopes of the mountain. After registration and a briefing with your guides, you step onto the trail through a dense montane rainforest. The path winds gently upward beneath a canopy of towering trees draped in moss, creating a cool, shaded atmosphere filled with birdsong and the rustling of leaves.

As you walk, keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys leaping through the branches above you. The ground is often damp and can get muddy during the rainy season, making trekking poles useful. After several hours of steady climbing, the forest thins, revealing your first glimpses of the expansive moorland ahead.

You arrive at Machame Camp, set on a cleared ridge where you enjoy your first mountain sunset and a warm dinner before settling into your tent for the night.

Your day begins with a steep but rewarding climb out of the rainforest and up a rocky ridge. As you ascend, the vegetation gradually transitions from lush forest to heather and moorland, with hardy shrubs and giant heathers defining the new landscape.

Clearings along the trail offer magnificent views over the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera that forms one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic features. The air becomes cooler and crisper as you approach the high-altitude environment.

By mid-afternoon you arrive at Shira Camp, perched on the broad, open plateau. The views here stretch endlessly, especially at sunset when the sky glows behind the snowy summit of Kibo.

Today is a crucial acclimatization day following the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” The trail leads upward across a barren alpine desert, a stark and dramatic contrast to the lush forest of two days earlier.

You gradually approach the towering black rock formation known as Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of 4,630m. Here you pause for lunch and acclimatization this is often the first point where many climbers feel the thinning air.

Afterward, you begin your descent into the scenic Barranco Valley. As you drop in altitude, the landscape softens again with giant senecio plants and lobelias filling the valley floor.

You arrive at Barranco Camp, set directly below the impressive Barranco Wall, a massive rock face you will tackle the next morning. The camp is famous for its stunning views and dramatic location.

You start the day with a memorable challenge: the Barranco Wall, often nicknamed the “Breakfast Wall.” The ascent looks intimidating at first but is a fun and rewarding climb, using both hands and feet to navigate the natural rock steps. No technical climbing is needed, but the scramble is exciting.

Once atop the wall, the trail continues through rolling valleys carved by ancient glaciers. The views of the Kibo Glacier above you are magnificent, especially in the clear morning light.

After several gentle ascents and descents, you arrive at Karanga Camp, sitting proudly on a rocky ridge with sweeping views of the mountain and the plains below.

Today’s trek is shorter but steadily uphill, giving your body valuable time to acclimatize before the summit attempt. The trail crosses glacial scree and open high-altitude desert, with little vegetation.

You reach Barafu Camp, your base for the final ascent. The camp is perched on an exposed ridge, often windy and cold, but offering incredible views of Mawenzi Peak in the distance.

After an early dinner, you rest inside your tent, preparing your gear and conserving energy for the midnight summit push.

Shortly after midnight, you begin the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. The trail climbs steeply up rugged volcanic scree, illuminated only by your headlamp and the stars overhead. Temperatures are below freezing, and the switchbacks are slow and demanding.

As dawn approaches, you reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Here the rising sun paints the glaciers in shades of pink and gold, giving you renewed energy for the final push.

A gentle but emotional walk along the crater edge leads you to UHURU PEAK (5,895m) the highest point in Africa. You celebrate your achievement with photos and a moment to take in the vast panorama stretching across Tanzania and Kenya.

You then begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to the warmer climate of Mweka Camp, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.

Your final descent takes you through the beautiful rainforest once again, with soft, damp earth underfoot and the canopy offering shade as the air becomes warmer and thicker.

After 3-4 hours you reach Mweka Gate, where you sign out, enjoy a celebratory moment with your guides, and receive your climbing certificate gold for Uhuru, green for Stella Point.

This marks the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.

Frequent Asked Question`s

How difficult is the Machame Route?

Machame is considered moderate to challenging. It involves steep sections, long trekking days, and higher altitude—but it has one of the highest summit success rates due to excellent acclimatization.

Why is Machame called the “Whiskey Route”?

It earned the name because it is tougher than the Marangu Route (the “Coca-Cola Route”). It is more scenic, more adventurous, and requires camping instead of hut accommodation.

What is the success rate on the Machame Route?

With proper acclimatization over 7 days, the success rate is typically 85–90%, making it one of the most reliable routes for reaching Uhuru Peak.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

No technical climbing skills are required. However, you should be physically fit, comfortable hiking 5–8 hours a day, and prepared for altitude.

Is the Barranco Wall dangerous?

It looks intimidating but is not technical. It is a hands-and-feet scramble on solid rock ledges. With guide support, it’s safe and fun for most trekkers.
